SOMERSET County Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Program
Cessation
Somerset County Health Department offers two different cessation programs to all Somerset County residents/workers over the age of 18 who use tobacco and would like to quit. The classes are designed to be fun, supportive, educational, and non-judgmental.
- 10 weeks of free group classes
o Wednesdays, 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. - Free Chantix
o Client must get Rx
o Voucher system with local pharmacy - Class description:
o First half of class is support, second half is education
o Topics: addiction & recovery, stress & coping, weight management, positive thinking, health consequences, money, secondhand smoke, & preventing relapse
o Basic health assessments include weight, blood pressure, & BMI
o Clients evaluate the program and facilitator at the end of the 10 weeks
o Clients are followed up via phone if the program ends before the medication supply - All clients are put on our quarterly newsletter mailing list
- All clients are contacted at three, six, nine, and twelve months for follow up.

Somerset County Health Department Cessation Program
The Somerset County Health Department also offers a 10-12 week cessation program FREE to Somerset County residents and employees who are 18 or older. Participants must have a prescription order from a health care provider which states that individuals may participate in a smoking cessation classes and may use nicotine replacement aids such as, Zyban or the new Chantix.medication. Participants are required to attend an individual counseling session each week to assess progress and to receive education and support. Sessions are scheduled at a time and place which are convenient for the participant. Home visits, work site visits, and after hour visits may also be arranged. The third program offered in Somerset County is:
Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Princess Anne, MD offers a cessation program based on the American Lung Association "Freedom From Smoking Training" program. Individuals receive cessation counseling, over the counter nicotine replacement patches, nicotine replacement gum, and individualized smoking cessation classes or group classes. This program is funded by a Cigarette Restitution Fund (CRF)mini grant from Somerset County Health Department for Somerset County residents and is open to any church, individual or organization.
