Non-smokers living with smokers at greater risk for stroke -- August 13, 2008
A recent study of non-smokers who are, or had been married to smokers found that those who lived with smokers were at significantly higher risk for stroke, with individuals whom had also been smokers themselves at the highest risk. Non-smokers who were married to former smokers were not at higher risk for stroke. Read more here.

Dopamine receptor subtype controls initial sensitivity to nicotine -- August 13, 2008
Researchers have identified a dopamine receptor subtype which controls the initial rewarding, and perhaps addicting, properties of nicotine. These findings may have implications for treatment of smoking cessation and reducing withdrawal symptoms. Read more here.

Decreases in secondhand smoke exposure in past decade; least among young children -- August 8, 2008
An analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) between 1988 and 2004 showed that only 46% of Americans showed signs of exposure to secondhand smoke between the years of 1999 to 2004, a marked decline from 84% between 1988 to 1994. Children ages 4 to 11 showed the smallest decrease in exposure to secondhand smoke, from 85% between 1988 to 1994 to 61% between 1999 to 2004. Read more here.

House approves bill for FDA to regulate tobacco - July 31, 2008
The U.S. House of Representatives showed its support (326-102) by passing the bill to allow the FDA to regulate tobacco products and ban the use of certain flavors in cigarettes. However, menthol flavoring is excluded and the Senate is not likely to review the bill until after the 1st of next year. Read more here.
