State Anti-Smoking Campaigns Shown Effective - 01/31/08
States spending more money on smoking prevention see better reductions in adult smoking rates, according to recent findings. The CDC suggests reductions in smoking by millions of people would have occurred if more states had funded prevention efforts at those levels recommended by the CDC during the time of the study. Nicotine Dependence Associated with Increased Risk of Alcohol and Illicit Drug Use - 01/30/2008
A recent analysis of data from the 2006 National Household Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) reported by CESAR revealed that persons dependent on nicotine are more likely to report alcohol and illicit drug use. Almost 60% (61.6 million) of the current smokers aged 12 or older met the criteria for nicotine dependence. Nicotine dependence was related to increased use of past month alcohol use, binge drinking, heavy alcohol use, and use of illicit drugs. Read more here.
New Research Further Proves Efficacy of truth® Youth Smoking Prevention Campaign and Inefficacy of Philip Morris Campaign - 01/30/2008
Youth exposed to the American Legacy Foundation's national truth® youth smoking prevention campaign are more likely to hold negative feelings toward the tobacco industry and have less intentions to smoke. Additionally, teens who saw Philip Morris' "Think Don't Smoke" advertising campaign held more positive attitudes towards tobacco companies. Read more here.
Smoking Before Age 12 Linked to Alcohol and Drug Abuse - 01/04/2008
A recent analysis of data from the National Household Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) reported by CESAR revealed that youth who initiated regular smoking at or before age 12 were twice as likely to meet criteria for marijuana dependence and three times as likely to meet abuse or dependence criteria for any other illicit drug than were adolescents who began smoking at age 16 or older.
