The
FDA, concerned about claims of safety regarding electronic cigarettes,
has released the results of tests of e-cigarettes, finding carcinogens

Mouth and throat surgery outcomes improved by smoking cessation -- July 20, 2009
A
new review concludes that short periods (4-8 weeks) of abstinence from
smoking prior to mouth or throat surgery improves wound healing, while
continued post-operative smoking cessation reduces the risk of cancer recurrence. Read more here.
Pre-quit patch use increases success -- July 20, 2009
A
new research study has found that 22% of smokers who wore a nicotine
replacement patch for two weeks prior to their quit date abstained for
10 weeks after their quit date, while only 11% who had a placebo patch
abstained that long. Read more here.
FDA announces stronger warnings for Chantix and Zyban -- July 13, 2009
The
FDA has announced plans to add stronger warnings about increased risk
for suicide among individuals taking Chantix, as well as require the
warnings about suicide currently on Wellbutrin to be on Zyban, the
brand name for Wellbutrin (buproprion) marketed for smoking cessation. Read more here.
Smoking ban for military recommended -- July 13, 2009
A
new study commissioned by the Pentagon and Department of Veterans
Affairs recommends phasing out all tobacco sales and use over a 5 or 10
year period, citing impaired military readiness in the short term and
increased cancer risk in the long term as consequences of tobacco use. Read more here.
Chemicals in tobacco smoke may cause brain damage -- July 6, 2009
Researchers from the Indian National Brain Research Center have
found that the compound NNK, found in tobacco smoke, may result in
neuroinflammation when introduced to the brain. This inflammation may
provoke a reaction from the immune system that results in the brain

The main provisions of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which was signed in to law by President Obama on June 22, 2009, allows the FDA to create a Center for Tobacco Products that will be able to set tobacco standards, require tobacco companies to disclose all ingredients in their products, approve claims of reduced harm such as "mild" or "light", require warning labels, prohibit the use of flavoring additives (except menthol) and require tobacco companies to disclose all research on the marketing and the effects of tobacco products.
