Programs & Materials

A major component of the MDQuit mission is to provide easy access to evidence-based programs and materials for tobacco use prevention and cessation.  In addition to the information and links on our website, MDQuit offers access to a library of print materials in our Resource Center at UMBC.  Please contact us if you would like to visit the Center or receive copies of research articles.

Best Practices

When selecting and developing prevention and cessation programs, MDQuit encourages healthcare providers to stay up-to-date on the Centers for Disease Control's Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs.  The 2007 edition is available for download here and at the CDC website

Clinical Practice Guidelines

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services released a Clinician's Packet for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence in 2003 that is available for download here and at the DHHS website.

MDQuit has developed an hour long, getting ready to quit presentation entitled, "Clearing the Air:  What You Need to Know and Do to Prepare to Quit Smoking" in conjunction with Baltimore County Health Department and the Maryland American Lung Association.  This hour long getting ready to quit class includes a PowerPoint Presentation, a standardized presenter's manual, and packet of information for participants.  This class is designed to help smokers to think about where they are with their tobacco use and prepare for change.  The presentation is intended to give smokers information on all of the available resources and provide keys to successful quitting.

Cessation

As you will see, there are numerous ways to intervene with cigarette smoking.  Our hope is that we can help healthcare providers to offer clients the information they need to make informed decisions and improve the likelihood that they will make a successful quit attempt. First, read about the Benefits of Quitting. Then, please follow the links below to find more information on a variety of treatment options for smoking cessation.

Prevention

The best way to avoid the negative effects of tobacco use is to prevent people from initiating use. Therefore, MDQuit is dedicated to providing information on the latest prevention efforts and techniques for all ages and populations.  Click here to link to prevention information.  In addition, hard copies of prevention literature and materials are available at the MDQuit Resource Center on the UMBC Campus.
